Grow Your Own Food?

Okay, so my husband and I tried the whole traditional garden thing this summer.  Our neighbors had a nice open area next to their house that we were allowed to use and the whole family cleaned, tilled, planted, cared for, weeded, watered, and was rewarded by.... the deer enjoying an all you can eat buffet!  We live in the city in a well lit neighborhood, and in one night, the deer wiped out everything but the okra!  I was SO upset.  Not about the deer being in my neighborhood, that's kind of cool since I live in the city, but I was upset about losing the whole garden.  So, we talked about it and we decided to try raised bed gardening in our backyard this year.  I am doing research and reading all kinds of information about this, so if anyone has any suggestions, let me know!

I am really into this whole locally grown food thing right now but I am having a bit of a hard time finding locally grown food to buy. We used to have a farmer's market in the area but it closed down a while back.  There is a farm that is about 45 minutes from my house, so that might be considered locally grown.  I really want to grown my own veggies because I can control what kind of soil is used and what goes into that soil.  One of my kids suffers from horrible skin problems and allergies and I really think pesticides and chemicals in our food, water supply, and household supplies have a lot to do with it.  Anyone that has info on this is welcome to share.

Peace
